Hiking to Hasznos Castle

hasznosi vár

We recommend this wonderful little hike for lovers of mesmerizing viewpoints.

The fortress built next to the village of Hasznos, often referred to as the Cserteri Castle by many, has only a small cluster of walls remaining for posterity. However, it is certain that a unique atmosphere envelops its surroundings.

Presenting the main moments of the castle’s history, according to our knowledge, it was built in the early 14th century. Hasznos belonged to the former village of Cser, which was conquered by the Turks. In 1552, during the siege of Eger Castle, it fell into Turkish hands and later became the property of the Pásztó Abbey. It remained in good condition until the 19th century, after which its significant walls gradually merged with the ground over the decades.

The ruins of the castle can be reached with an extremely pleasant and easy walk, with just a slightly steeper ascent towards the top of the hill. Overcoming this minimal obstacle, the marvelous charm of the northwestern Mátra unfolds before us!

The Hasznos Castle hike begins at the end of the village, and within less than 1 km, the remains of the Cser Castle start to appear.

On a sunny, calm day, gather your friends and family and surrender yourselves to the captivating views of the Mátra Mountains.
