Szurdok hike in the Mátra Mountains

szurdok túra

Where else can the road lead from the western gateway of the Mátra Mountains but into the heart of the Mátra range!

We invite those longing for a forest environment to embark on an easy, family-friendly circular hike that can be enjoyed even with children.

The forested neighborhood of Pásztó, located among the mountains, the quaint village of Mátrakeresztes serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the unique corners of the Mátra region. From the picturesque village, one can reach Ágasvár through the valley of the Csörgő Stream, then continue the journey through the Két Vár (“Two Castles”) area, and finally return to the starting point along the side of the Fakanalas Restaurant.

During the hike, we can encounter remarkable formations such as the andesite peaks of Bagoly-kő, which are popular rock climbing spots to this day. We also come across the Vándor Spring, where the clear water can be tasted throughout the year.

The adventurous hike is approximately 8 kilometers long and can be completed in 2.5 to 3 hours at a leisurely pace. The elevation difference is low, except for a slightly more challenging but short section in the Csörgő Gorge detour. Therefore, it can be comfortably completed with young children and even with pets.

Hiking boots are essential for this hiking trip, but apart from that, there is no need for anything else. Along the hiking trail, there are also plenty of fallen branches that can serve as walking sticks if needed.

We recommend visiting the Varázsvölgy Shop, which will soon open in the reception building. There you can find a selection of local refreshments to take with you on your journey, ranging from locally pressed fruit juices to crystal-clear locally bottled water.

Come and visit us at Varázsvölgy, and we will set you off on a memorable Mátra adventure!
